This test directly measures how easily water can enter concrete, revealing its internal pore structure. A lower absorption value means a denser concrete with fewer pathways for water and chemicals.
Water absorption is a reliable indicator of durability. Low-absorption concrete is less prone to freeze–thaw cracking, sulfate attack, and chemical ingress — all major causes of long-term deterioration.
High absorption means more moisture and chlorides can reach embedded steel, accelerating corrosion and reducing service life. Lower absorption ensures better protection against reinforcement rusting.
