What is the Flash & Fire Point Test of Bitumen?

The Flash Point is the lowest temperature at which bitumen vapour ignites momentarily when a small flame is applied. The Fire Point is the temperature at which the vapour continues to burn for at least 5 seconds. These parameters are critical safety parameters for bitumen handling, storage and application during road construction.

Conducted as per IS 1209 (Pensky-Martens Closed Cup) and ASTM D92 (Cleveland Open Cup), flash and fire point testing ensures that bitumen is not heated beyond safe temperatures at the hot mix plant, bitumen boiler or distributor — preventing fire accidents. Minimum flash point of 220°C is required for VG grade paving bitumens per IS 73.

How the Flash & Fire Point Test of Bitumen is Conducted

  • 1
    Sample Preparation
Bitumen sample heated to approximately 75°C above expected flash point. Poured into Cleveland cup or Pensky-Martens cup to specified level.
  • 2
    Heating Rate Setup
Sample heated at 14–17°C/min (Cleveland) or 5–6°C/min (Pensky-Martens) per IS 1209.
  • 3
    Test Flame Application
Small test flame applied every 2°C rise in temperature. Temperature recorded at first flash (flash point).
  • 4
    Fire Point Determination
Heating continued. Temperature recorded when sustained burning for ≥5 seconds (fire point).
  • 5
    IS 73 Compliance Report
Flash and fire point vs IS 73 minimum of 220°C. NABL report within 3 days.
