What is the Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete?

The Static Modulus of Elasticity of concrete is the ratio of applied stress to resulting strain in the elastic range. It is measured by applying incremental compressive loads to a cylindrical concrete specimen while simultaneously measuring longitudinal strain using compressometers or strain gauges, and plotting the stress-strain curve.

Conducted as per IS 516 and ASTM C469, the modulus of elasticity is a critical input for structural design calculations — particularly for deflection of beams and slabs, prestress loss in post-tensioned structures, creep and shrinkage analysis and dynamic response calculations. Global Lab uses NABL-calibrated compressometers and extensometers for precise strain measurement.

Simultaneous Strength Test
Elastic modulus and compressive strength determined from same specimen.
Strain Gauge Option
Electrical strain gauges used for high-precision E-value measurement.
NABL Certified Reports
All results on NABL-accredited letterhead per IS 516 / ASTM C469.
All Concrete Grades
Normal, HPC and SCC mixes tested from M20 to M100.

How the Modulus of Elasticity of Concrete is Conducted

  • 1
    Specimen Preparation
150×300mm cylinders are cast or cored. Ends are ground flat and parallel. Length/diameter ratio of 2:1 confirmed.
  • 2
    Compressometer/Gauge Attachment
Compressometer or electrical strain gauges are attached to the mid-third of the cylinder to measure longitudinal strain.
  • 3
    Pre-Loading Cycles
Two pre-conditioning load cycles to 40% of compressive strength are applied to seat the specimen and gauges.
  • 4
    E-Value Loading
Load is applied in increments. Stress and strain are recorded at each increment up to 40% of compressive strength.
  • 5
    Modulus Calculation & Reporting
Chord modulus E = (S2-S1)/(ε2-0.00005) calculated per ASTM C469. Stress-strain curve plotted. NABL report issued.
