What is the Self-Compacting Concrete Mix Design?

Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) is a highly flowable, non-segregating concrete that fills formwork and encapsulates reinforcement under its own weight without any mechanical vibration. SCC achieves its unique rheological properties through a combination of high paste volume, SCMs, PCE superplasticisers and viscosity modifying agents (VMAs).

At Global Lab, SCC mix designs are developed as per EFNARC 2005 Guidelines and IS 10262:2019. Fresh SCC is characterised by three key properties — flowability (slump flow, T500), passing ability (L-box, J-ring) and segregation resistance (GTM screen stability, V-funnel) — all tested in our NABL-accredited laboratory.

Full Fresh Property Testing
Slump flow, T500, L-box, J-ring, V-funnel, GTM screen stability all tested.
No Vibration Required
Self-consolidates under gravity — eliminates vibration-related defects and labour.
EFNARC Classification
Mix classified per EFNARC viscosity (VS) and flow (SF) classes for application.
Segregation Resistance
Viscosity and cohesion optimised to prevent bleeding and segregation during flow.
NABL Certified Reports
Complete SCC mix design report on NABL-accredited letterhead.
Precast & In-Situ
Mix designs for both precast factory and in-situ SCC applications.

How the Self-Compacting Concrete Mix Design is Conducted

  • 1
    Material Testing & Selection
Cement, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate (max 16mm for SCC), SCMs, PCE superplasticiser and VMA are tested individually.
  • 2
    Paste Volume & W/P Ratio
High paste volume (38–42%) and low W/P ratio (0.28–0.38) calculated for target strength and flowability.
  • 3
    PCE & VMA Optimisation
Superplasticiser and VMA dosages optimised through mini-slump and Marsh cone tests.
  • 4
    Full Trial Mix
    Fresh SCC testing: slump flow, T500, L-box (H2/H1 ≥0.8), J-ring, V-funnel (T5min), GTM sieve stability. Cube casting at 7, 28 days.
  • 5
    EFNARC Classification & Report
Mix classified per EFNARC SF and VS classes. Final NABL mix design report issued after 28-day strength confirmation.
