Pile Lateral Load Test
(Horizontal Load Test)
Static lateral load test on piles to determine their resistance to horizontal forces — essential for retaining walls, bridge abutments, marine jetties and structures subject to wind, seismic and wave loading.
What is the Pile Lateral Load Test?
The Pile Lateral Load Test applies a horizontal static load to the pile head to determine the pile's lateral resistance and load-deflection behaviour. Lateral capacity depends on soil stiffness, pile stiffness, pile head fixity and the applied load eccentricity — all captured in this test.
Conducted as per ASTM D3966 and IS 2911 Part 4, this test is specified for bridge abutment piles, jetty dolphins, retaining wall king piles and structures in seismic zones. Two adjacent piles are typically tested by jacking them apart laterally — providing simultaneous lateral load test data for both piles.

How the Pile Lateral Load Test is Conducted
-
1Test Pile PreparationTwo adjacent test piles are prepared with pile caps or collars to receive the horizontal loading apparatus.
-
2Hydraulic Jack PlacementA hydraulic jack is placed horizontally between the two pile heads to apply lateral load simultaneously to both piles.
-
3Deflection Measurement SetupLVDTs and dial gauges are installed at pile head and at depth (where accessible) to measure lateral deflection.
-
4Incremental Lateral Load ApplicationLateral load is applied in increments per ASTM D3966. Deflection is recorded after stabilisation at each increment.
-
5Load-Deflection Analysis & ReportingLateral load vs deflection curves are plotted. Lateral stiffness, yield load and ultimate lateral capacity are determined. NABL report within 7 days.
