Concrete Water Absorption Test
(30-Minute Surface Absorption)
Measurement of the rate of water absorption of hardened concrete specimens — a simple, practical durability indicator assessing the openness of the near-surface pore structure.
What is the Concrete Water Absorption Test?
The Concrete Water Absorption Test measures the percentage increase in mass of oven-dried concrete specimens after immersion in water for specified durations (30 minutes and 24 hours). The difference between 30-minute and 24-hour absorption indicates the rate of capillary absorption — a key near-surface durability indicator.
Conducted as per IS 1199 and ASTM C642, water absorption testing is one of the simplest and most widely used concrete durability tests. It is routinely conducted alongside RCPT and water permeability for comprehensive durability characterisation of concrete mixes incorporating SCMs, waterproofing admixtures or special cements.

How the Concrete Water Absorption Test is Conducted
-
1Specimen Preparation100mm cube or 100mm dia × 50mm disc specimens oven-dried at 105°C for 72 hours until constant mass.
-
2Initial Dry MassCooled specimens weighed immediately after removal from oven.
-
330-Minute ImmersionSpecimens placed in water at 27°C. After 30 minutes removed, surface dried, weighed.
-
424-Hour ImmersionSpecimens returned to water for full 24 hours. Removed, surface dried, weighed.
-
5Absorption Calculation & Report30-min absorption = (W30-Wdry)/Wdry×100. 24-hr absorption calculated similarly. NABL report within 48 hours.
