What is the Concrete Water Absorption Test?

The Concrete Water Absorption Test measures the percentage increase in mass of oven-dried concrete specimens after immersion in water for specified durations (30 minutes and 24 hours). The difference between 30-minute and 24-hour absorption indicates the rate of capillary absorption — a key near-surface durability indicator.

Conducted as per IS 1199 and ASTM C642, water absorption testing is one of the simplest and most widely used concrete durability tests. It is routinely conducted alongside RCPT and water permeability for comprehensive durability characterisation of concrete mixes incorporating SCMs, waterproofing admixtures or special cements.

Simple & Rapid Test
Oven drying + water immersion — straightforward, low-cost durability indicator.
30-Min & 24-Hour Absorption
Two measurements track initial capillary absorption rate.
Admixture Effectiveness
Quantifies reduction in absorption from crystalline waterproofing admixtures.
SCM Comparison
Compares water absorption of OPC vs fly ash, GGBS and silica fume concrete.
NABL Certified Reports
All results on NABL-accredited letterhead per IS 1199 / ASTM C642.
Combined Durability Package
Water absorption + RCPT + Resistivity + Permeability for full profile.

How the Concrete Water Absorption Test is Conducted

  • 1
    Specimen Preparation
100mm cube or 100mm dia × 50mm disc specimens oven-dried at 105°C for 72 hours until constant mass.
  • 2
    Initial Dry Mass
Cooled specimens weighed immediately after removal from oven.
  • 3
    30-Minute Immersion
Specimens placed in water at 27°C. After 30 minutes removed, surface dried, weighed.
  • 4
    24-Hour Immersion
Specimens returned to water for full 24 hours. Removed, surface dried, weighed.
  • 5
    Absorption Calculation & Report
30-min absorption = (W30-Wdry)/Wdry×100. 24-hr absorption calculated similarly. NABL report within 48 hours.
