What is the Common Burnt Clay Brick Testing?

Common Burnt Clay Brick Testing verifies that bricks meet the mandatory requirements of IS 1077:1992 for use in load-bearing and non-load-bearing masonry construction. Key tests include compressive strength (Class designation), water absorption (≤20%), efflorescence rating and dimensional tolerances.

At Global Lab, brick testing covers the complete IS 1077 test suite including compressive strength (Classes 5 through 35), water absorption by 24-hour cold water immersion and 5-hour boiling, efflorescence assessment and dimensional checks. Results determine the brick class designation and suitability for structural masonry per IS 1905.

IS 1077 Class Designation
Bricks classified as Class 5 to 35 based on measured compressive strength.
Compressive Strength Testing
Individual brick compressive strength tested in NABL-calibrated CTM.
Water Absorption Test
24-hour cold water and 5-hour boiling absorption per IS 3495 Part 2.
Efflorescence Assessment
Visual rating: nil, slight, moderate, heavy or serious per IS 3495 Part 3.
NABL Certified Reports
All results on NABL-accredited letterhead with IS 1077 compliance statement.
Dimensional Tolerance Check
Length, width and height tolerances per IS 1077 Table 1.

How the Common Burnt Clay Brick Testing is Conducted

  • 1
    Sample Collection
Minimum 20 bricks selected per IS 5454 sampling procedure from each consignment.
  • 2
    Dimensional Measurement
Length, width and height of all 20 bricks measured. Mean and range checked against IS 1077 tolerances.
  • 3
    Specimen Preparation for Compression
5 bricks filled with cement mortar on frog side, cured 24 hours. Both faces ground flat and parallel.
  • 4
    Compressive Strength Test
Prepared bricks tested in CTM at 14 N/mm²/min per IS 3495 Part 1.
  • 5
    Water Absorption & Efflorescence
5 bricks tested for 24-hr absorption. 5 bricks tested for efflorescence per IS 3495 Part 3. NABL report within 14 days.
