Binding Wire Testing
(IS 280 — Mild Steel Wire)
Mechanical testing of mild steel binding wire — verifying tensile strength, elongation, ductility (wrapping test) and dimensional accuracy per IS 280 for use in reinforcement bar tying and construction applications.
What is the Binding Wire Testing?
Binding Wire (IS 280 mild steel wire) is used extensively on construction sites for tying reinforcement bars at intersections and holding cage assemblies together. Though not a structural element, inadequate quality binding wire can snap during tying — slowing construction and potentially affecting reinforcement positioning before concreting.
At Global Lab, binding wire testing per IS 280 covers tensile strength (minimum 340 MPa for Grade 1), elongation at break, ductility (wrapping test — wire wound around its own diameter without cracking), diameter measurement and mass per unit length verification — all mandatory parameters per IS 280.

How the Binding Wire Testing is Conducted
-
1Sample CollectionWire samples collected from coils per IS 280 sampling procedure.
-
2Diameter & MassWire diameter measured at 5 points. Mass per metre calculated from weighed length.
-
3Tensile TestWire gripped in NABL-calibrated UTM. Tensile strength and elongation measured.
-
4Wrapping TestWire wound tightly around its own diameter for 8 turns. Inspected for cracks.
