What is the Water Content Test of Bitumen?

Water in bitumen causes foaming when the binder is heated above 100°C — a serious safety hazard in the mixing plant — and interferes with adhesion between binder and aggregate. IS 73:2013 (Paving Bitumen — Specification) therefore limits water content to a maximum of 0.2% by mass for all viscosity grades (VG-10 to VG-40), and every consignment arriving at a hot-mix plant or refinery depot should be verified before use.

Global Lab determines water content by the Dean & Stark method per IS 1211:2022 (Second Revision, superseding the 1978 edition) — the sample is distilled with a water-immiscible solvent that carries over the moisture, which condenses and collects in a graduated receiver where its volume is read directly. The method applies to paving bitumen, cutback bitumen, bitumen emulsions, crude tar and allied bituminous materials.

How the Water Content Test of Bitumen is Conducted

    Sample Preparation

    A representative bitumen sample is taken per IS 1201 sampling practice, homogenised, and an accurately weighed portion transferred to the distillation flask.

    Solvent Addition & Assembly

    A water-immiscible aromatic solvent (xylene type, per IS 1211:2022) is added and the flask connected to the Dean & Stark receiver and reflux condenser with all joints checked for vapour tightness.

    Controlled Distillation

    The flask is heated so distillation proceeds at the specified reflux rate; solvent vapour carries the water over, where it condenses and settles into the graduated receiver.

    End-Point Confirmation

    Distillation continues until the water volume in the receiver remains constant for the specified interval and the condenser runs clear — confirming all moisture has been recovered.

    Reading & Calculation

    The collected water volume is read to the receiver graduation, corrected as required, and expressed as percent by mass of the original sample.
