Steel Tube — Mechanical Testing(IS 3601:2006)
Mechanical and dimensional testing of steel tubes for mechanical and general engineering purposes per IS 3601:2006 — tensile strength, flattening/flare test and wall-thickness verification.
What is Steel Tube Mechanical Testing?
Steel tubes for mechanical and general engineering purposes to IS 3601:2006 cover a broader application range than structural tube — fluid and gas conveyance, machine parts, and general fabrication — with grades such as WT210, WT240 and WT310 defined by minimum yield and tensile strength. The standard sets requirements for tensile properties, weld integrity (for welded tube) and dimensional tolerance on outside diameter and wall thickness.
Global Lab tests steel tube against IS 3601:2006 with a tensile test confirming the declared WT grade's yield strength, tensile strength and elongation, a flattening or flare test on welded tube to verify seam ductility, and dimensional checks on outside diameter, wall thickness and length tolerance — confirming the tube is fit for its intended mechanical or general-engineering application.

How the Steel Tube — Mechanical Testing is Conducted
- 1
Sample Selection & Dimensional Check
A representative tube length is sampled and checked for outside diameter, wall thickness and length tolerance against IS 3601:2006 limits. - 2
Tensile Coupon Preparation
A tensile test piece is cut from the tube body per IS 3601:2006 sampling requirements. - 3
Tensile Testing
The coupon is loaded in a calibrated UTM to verify yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation against the declared WT grade. - 4
Flattening / Flare Test
For welded tube, a ring specimen is flattened or flared per the standard to verify weld-seam ductility and freedom from cracking. - 5
Reporting
Tensile, weld-integrity and dimensional results are compiled into a NABL-accredited report confirming grade compliance, issued via Autovity QLMS.
