What is the Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test of Rock?

Sound travels faster through intact rock than through fractured or weathered rock — making ultrasonic pulse velocity the most efficient non-destructive index of rock quality. Measuring P-wave (and where equipped, S-wave) transit times through a prepared core yields velocities that, combined with density, give the dynamic Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio, and correlate with strength, weathering grade and micro-crack density. Indian lab practice follows the ISRM Suggested Method for laboratory sonic velocity (IS 13311 Part 1 covers the concrete analogue).
