What is the Pulverised Fuel Ash Lime Brick Testing?

Pulverised Fuel Ash Lime (PFA-Lime) Bricks — commonly known as FAL-G bricks or fly ash bricks — are manufactured from fly ash (conforming to IS 3812), Class C hydrated lime (IS 712), sand or bottom ash, and gypsum as an optional additive. The mixture is hydraulically pressed and steam-cured, forming chemically bonded bricks through calcium-silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gel — the same binding compound formed in Portland cement hydration.

At Global Lab, PFA-Lime brick testing is conducted as per IS 12894:2002 covering wet compressive strength (class designation 3.5 to 30 N/mm²), water absorption (≤20% up to Class 12.5; ≤15% for higher classes), drying shrinkage (≤0.15%), efflorescence rating and dimensional tolerances (±3mm length, ±2mm width/height). All tests conducted per IS 3495 Parts 1, 2 and 3 using NABL-calibrated equipment — providing complete IS 12894 class compliance certificates.

IS 12894:2002 Class Designation
Bricks classified as Class 3.5 to 30 N/mm² based on measured wet compressive strength.
Wet Compressive Strength
Minimum average wet compressive strength per IS 3495 Part 1 — tested wet after 24-hour immersion.
Water Absorption ≤20% / ≤15%
24-hour cold water immersion test per IS 3495 Part 2 — ≤20% up to Class 12.5; ≤15% for higher classes.
Drying Shrinkage ≤0.15%
Average drying shrinkage of 3 bricks per IS 4139 — maximum 0.15% per IS 12894.
NABL Certified Reports
All test and calibration results are backed by traceable measurements and standardized procedures.
Efflorescence & Dimensions
Efflorescence rating (≤moderate up to Class 12.5; ≤slight for higher) and dimensional tolerances per IS 12894.

How the Pulverised Fuel Ash Lime Brick Testing is Conducted

  • 1
    Sample Collection
Minimum 20 bricks selected per IS 5454 sampling procedure from each consignment or production batch.
  • 2
    Dimensional Measurement
Length, width and height of all 20 bricks measured per IS 12894 Figure 2. Tolerances (±3mm length, ±2mm width/height) checked.
  • 3
    Wet Compressive Strength Test
5 bricks soaked in water for 24 hours, surface dried and tested in CTM per IS 3495 Part 1. Individual brick strength not to fall below class minimum by more than 20%.
  • 4
Water Absorption, Drying Shrinkage & Efflorescence
Water absorption on 5 bricks per IS 3495 Part 2 (24-hr cold immersion). Drying shrinkage on 3 bricks per IS 4139. Efflorescence on 5 bricks per IS 3495 Part 3.
  • 5
    IS 12894 Class Report
Average wet compressive strength assigns class designation. All results vs IS 12894:2002 limits. NABL report within 14 days.
