What is the Coarse Aggregate Testing?

Coarse Aggregate Testing assesses whether crushed stone, gravel or recycled aggregate meets the requirements of IS 383:2016 for use in structural concrete. Key properties tested include particle size distribution, crushing value, impact value, abrasion value, specific gravity, water absorption, flakiness and elongation indices and soundness.

At Global Lab, coarse aggregate testing covers the complete IS 383 test suite including both physical and mechanical tests. Aggregate mechanical properties (crushing value, impact value, abrasion value) directly govern the compressive strength and wear resistance of concrete — making them critical quality parameters for roads, bridges and high-rise construction.

Crushing Value (ACV)
Aggregate Crushing Value — indicates resistance to progressive load under compression.
Impact Value (AIV)
Aggregate Impact Value — resistance to sudden impact loads per IS 2386 Part 4.
Los Angeles Abrasion Value
Resistance to abrasion and degradation — critical for pavement aggregates.
Flakiness & Elongation Index
Shape indices affecting concrete workability and strength per IS 2386 Part 1.
NABL Certified Reports
All results on NABL-accredited letterhead with IS 383 compliance statement.
Soundness Testing
Sodium/magnesium sulphate soundness test per IS 2386 Part 5 for durability.

How the Coarse Aggregate Testing is Conducted

  • 1
    Sample Collection & Preparation
Representative sample collected per IS 2386 Part 1. Sample reduced to test portions using riffle box.
  • 2
    Sieve Analysis & Grading
Dried sample passed through IS sieve series (80mm to 4.75mm). Grading checked against IS 383 nominal size requirements.
  • 3
    Crushing, Impact & Abrasion Tests
ACV, AIV and LA abrasion tested per IS 2386 Part 4. Results compared against IS 383 Table 3 limits.
  • 4
    Specific Gravity, Absorption & Shape
SSD specific gravity and absorption per IS 2386 Part 3. Flakiness and elongation indices per IS 2386 Part 1.
  • 5
    IS 383 Compliance Report
All results compared against IS 383:2016. NABL report with compliance statement issued within 7 days.
