Coarse Aggregate Testing
(Gravel & Crushed Stone — IS 383)
Comprehensive physical and mechanical testing of coarse aggregates (gravel, crushed stone, recycled concrete aggregate) as per IS 383 — verifying strength, durability and grading for concrete applications.
What is the Coarse Aggregate Testing?
Coarse Aggregate Testing assesses whether crushed stone, gravel or recycled aggregate meets the requirements of IS 383:2016 for use in structural concrete. Key properties tested include particle size distribution, crushing value, impact value, abrasion value, specific gravity, water absorption, flakiness and elongation indices and soundness.
At Global Lab, coarse aggregate testing covers the complete IS 383 test suite including both physical and mechanical tests. Aggregate mechanical properties (crushing value, impact value, abrasion value) directly govern the compressive strength and wear resistance of concrete — making them critical quality parameters for roads, bridges and high-rise construction.

How the Coarse Aggregate Testing is Conducted
-
1Sample Collection & PreparationRepresentative sample collected per IS 2386 Part 1. Sample reduced to test portions using riffle box.
-
2Sieve Analysis & GradingDried sample passed through IS sieve series (80mm to 4.75mm). Grading checked against IS 383 nominal size requirements.
-
3Crushing, Impact & Abrasion TestsACV, AIV and LA abrasion tested per IS 2386 Part 4. Results compared against IS 383 Table 3 limits.
-
4Specific Gravity, Absorption & ShapeSSD specific gravity and absorption per IS 2386 Part 3. Flakiness and elongation indices per IS 2386 Part 1.

5IS 383 Compliance ReportAll results compared against IS 383:2016. NABL report with compliance statement issued within 7 days.
