What is the GGBS Testing?

Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) is a by-product of iron manufacture — quenched molten blast furnace slag ground to cement fineness. GGBS has latent hydraulic properties activated by Portland cement alkalis. Used at 30–70% cement replacement, GGBS reduces heat of hydration, improves long-term strength and dramatically reduces chloride permeability.

At Global Lab, GGBS testing is conducted as per IS 16714 and BS EN 15167 covering Blaine fineness (≥400 m²/kg), glass content (≥85%), activity index at 7 and 28 days, soundness (autoclave expansion), moisture and chemical analysis (CaO, SiO₂, Al₂O₃, MgO, S, Cl) — standard grade GGBS vs Ultrafine GGBS (UGGBS ≥600 m²/kg).

IS 16714 Complete Suite
All mandatory physical and chemical tests per IS 16714 for standard GGBS.
Activity Index at 7 & 28 Days
Hydraulic reactivity confirmed by mortar strength index testing.
Blaine Fineness ≥400 m²/kg
Standard GGBS fineness verified — distinguishes from UGGBS (≥600).
Glass Content ≥85%
Amorphous glass content per XRD or selective dissolution method.
NABL Certified Reports
All results on NABL-accredited letterhead per IS 16714 / BS EN 15167.
Chemical Analysis
CaO, SiO₂, Al₂O₃, MgO, S, Cl, TiO₂ by XRF analysis.

How the GGBS Testing is Conducted

  • 1
    Sample Collection
GGBS sample from bulk tanker, silo or bag per IS 16714 procedure.
  • 2
    Physical Tests
Blaine fineness, specific gravity, moisture content and soundness tested.
  • 3
    Activity Index
Mortar cubes with 50% GGBS + 50% OPC vs 100% OPC control at 7 and 28 days.
  • 4
    Glass Content
XRD or selective dissolution method to determine amorphous content.
  • 5
    Chemical Analysis & Report
XRF chemical analysis. IS 16714 compliance checked. NABL report within 35 days.
