What is Block Board Testing?
Block boards — a core of timber battens sandwiched between plywood or veneer faces — are workhorse panels for doors, partitions, shelving and furniture. IS 1659:2004 (Block Boards — Specification) governs their quality in India, classifying boards by bond quality into BWP (boiling water proof, phenolic-bonded) and MR (moisture resistant) grades, and fixing requirements for dimensions, workmanship, moisture content, adhesion and strength.

Sampling & Conditioning
Test specimens are cut from sampled boards per IS 1659 sampling rules and conditioned to the specified temperature and humidity before testing. - 2

Length, width, thickness, squareness and edge straightness are measured against IS 1659 tolerances; face quality and core gaps are inspected. - 3
Moisture Content

Water Resistance (Grade Test)
BWP-grade specimens undergo the boiling-water cycles; MR-grade specimens the warm-water soak — followed by examination for delamination per the standard. - 5
