Chemical Analysis — Square & Rectangular Hollow Sections
(IS 4923 — SHS / RHS Chemical Testing)
Chemical composition testing of square hollow sections (SHS) and rectangular hollow sections (RHS) per IS 4923 — verifying C, Mn, S, P, Si for Grades YST 210, YST 240, YST 310 compliance in structural applications.
What is the Chemical Analysis — Square & Rectangular Hollow Sections?
Square and Rectangular Hollow Sections (SHS/RHS) per IS 4923 are widely used in structural steel fabrication — building frames, industrial sheds, trusses, bridges and furniture. IS 4923 specifies three yield strength grades: YST 210 (yield ≥210 MPa), YST 240 (≥240 MPa) and YST 310 (≥310 MPa) — each with specific chemical composition limits for C, Mn, S and P.
At Global Lab, SHS/RHS chemical analysis by OES verifies the composition per IS 4923 — Grade YST 210 (C ≤0.20%, Mn ≤1.30%), YST 240 (C ≤0.20%, Mn ≤1.50%) and YST 310 (C ≤0.22%, Mn ≤1.60%). Chemical grade verification is increasingly important as lower-grade hollow sections are misrepresented as YST 310 to meet structural design requirements.

How the Chemical Analysis — Square & Rectangular Hollow Sections is Conducted
-
1
Surface Preparation
A shallow groove (approx. 25mm deep) is cut into the concrete surface using a diamond-tipped cutting tool. The surface is cleaned of dust and debris. -
2
Insert Disc Placement
A specially designed steel insert disc is placed into the groove. A thin rod connects the disc to the pullout apparatus above the surface. -
3
Hydraulic Pullout Force Application
A hydraulic jack applies a steady, controlled pullout force to the insert disc via the reaction ring resting on the concrete surface. -
4
Failure Load Recording
The maximum force at which the concrete cone is extracted is recorded. A digital load indicator provides real-time readings with data logging. -
5
Strength Calculation & Reporting
The pullout force is correlated to cube compressive strength using established calibration curves. NABL-accredited reports are issued via Autovity QLMS.
