What is Hollow Steel Section (SHS/RHS) Testing?

Square and rectangular hollow steel sections (SHS/RHS) to IS 4923:2017 are widely used as structural columns and beams for their high strength-to-weight ratio and clean architectural profile. The standard covers hot- and cold-formed sections in grades YST210, YST240, YST310 and YST355, with tensile testing conducted per IS 1608 (Part 1):2022 — one tensile test is required per 500 sections manufactured under the same conditions.

Global Lab tests SHS/RHS sections against IS 4923:2017 with a tensile coupon taken away from the weld seam, tested per the current IS 1608 (Part 1):2022 method to verify yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation against the declared grade, alongside dimensional checks on section size, wall thickness and corner radius.

How the Square and Rectangular Hollow Steel Sections Testing is Conducted

  • 1

    Sampling Frequency Check

One tensile test is sampled per 500 hollow sections manufactured under the same conditions, per IS 4923:2017.
  • 2

    Tensile Coupon Preparation

A tensile test piece is cut from the section body, excluding the weld seam area, per IS 4923:2017 sampling rules.
  • 3

Tensile Testing to IS 1608 (Part 1):2022

The coupon is tested per the current IS 1608 (Part 1):2022 method to determine yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation against the declared YST grade.
  • 4

    Dimensional Verification

Section size, wall thickness and corner radius are checked against IS 4923:2017 tolerances.
  • 5

    Reporting

Tensile and dimensional results are compiled into a NABL-accredited report confirming grade compliance, issued via Autovity QLMS.
