Chemical Analysis — Reinforcement Steel Coupler(IS 16172:2023 · IS 228)
Chemical composition testing of mechanical rebar coupler material per IS 16172:2023 material requirements — confirming the coupler sleeve steel is metallurgically compatible with the rebar grades it splices.
What is Reinforcement Coupler Chemical Analysis?
A mechanical rebar coupler must not only perform to the tensile and slip requirements of IS 16172:2023 (covered under our mechanical coupler testing) — its sleeve/body material must also be metallurgically suited to the joint, since the coupler steel's chemistry affects machinability (for threaded couplers), weldability (for some swaged/forged designs) and long-term corrosion behaviour in the concrete environment.
Global Lab verifies coupler body material composition using OES per IS 228 methods, reporting carbon, manganese, sulphur, phosphorus and silicon — cross-checked against the coupler manufacturer's declared material specification (commonly medium-carbon or micro-alloyed steel per IS 2062 or equivalent, depending on the coupler design) to confirm the sleeve material matches what was qualified in the manufacturer's IS 16172:2023 type-test report.

How the Chemical Analysis — Reinforcement Steel Coupler is Conducted
- 1
Sample Selection
A representative coupler is sampled from the batch, with the manufacturer's declared material specification reviewed for comparison. - 2
Sectioning & Surface Preparation
The coupler sleeve is sectioned and the exposed face ground flat and clean before spectral analysis. - 3
OES Spark Analysis
Optical Emission Spectroscopy determines carbon, manganese, sulphur, phosphorus and silicon on the coupler body material, calibrated against certified reference material. - 4
Cross-Check Against Declaration
Measured composition is compared against the manufacturer's declared material specification and IS 228 analysis conventions. - 5
Reporting
Full elemental composition is compiled into a NABL-accredited report confirming (or flagging deviation from) the declared material, issued via Autovity QLMS.
