What is Bright Steel Bar Mechanical Testing?

Bright steel bars are cold-finished (drawn, turned, ground or peeled) precision bars used for machined components, fasteners, shafts and free-cutting applications. IS 9550:2001 governs their surface finish, dimensional tolerance and mechanical properties — cold working raises tensile and yield strength above the hot-rolled base material, and consistent mechanical properties are essential for downstream machining and heat-treatment behaviour.

Global Lab verifies bright bar stock against IS 9550:2001 with a tensile test (yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, elongation), hardness testing (Brinell or Rockwell, correlated to the cold-work condition) and dimensional/tolerance checks on diameter and straightness — confirming the bar meets the declared grade and is fit for precision machining or fastener manufacture.

Destructive (Coupon Test)
A representative test coupon or sample is taken from the batch — the parent lot is not compromised.
Fast Turnaround
On-site sampling with digital reports dispatched within 24 hours.
NABL Certified
All test reports carry NABL accreditation seal valid for legal and contractual use.
Pan-India Coverage
Site engineers deployed across 7 lab locations and all major project sites.
Digital Reporting
Access reports anytime via Autovity QLMS client dashboard — zero paperwork.

How the Bright Steel Bars — Mechanical Testing is Conducted

  • 1

    Sample Selection & Dimensional Check

A representative bar length is sampled and checked for diameter tolerance and straightness against IS 9550:2001 limits.
  • 2

    Tensile Coupon Preparation

A standard tensile test piece is machined from the bar, preserving the cold-worked surface layer where relevant to the declared condition.
  • 3

    Tensile Testing

The coupon is loaded in a calibrated UTM to determine yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation, compared against the declared grade.
  • 4

    Hardness Testing

Brinell or Rockwell hardness is measured on a polished cross-section and correlated against expected values for the cold-work condition.
  • 5

    Reporting

Tensile, hardness and dimensional results are compiled into a NABL-accredited report confirming grade compliance, issued via Autovity QLMS.
