Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet and Strip Testing(IS 6911:2017, R2022)
Mechanical testing of stainless steel plate, sheet and strip per IS 6911:2017 — tensile strength and bend testing across austenitic (304, 316, 316L, 321, 347) and ferritic/martensitic grades.
What is Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet and Strip Testing?
Stainless steel plate, sheet and strip to IS 6911:2017 (Reaffirmed 2022) covers hot-rolled and cold-rolled material across common austenitic grades (304, 316, 316L, 321, 347) and ferritic/martensitic grades, supplied in annealed or cold-rolled (work-hardened) condition. Mechanical properties differ meaningfully by condition — work-hardened material carries higher strength and hardness than annealed stock of the same grade.
Global Lab verifies stainless steel plate, sheet and strip against IS 6911:2017 with a tensile test to confirm yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation against the declared grade and condition, and a bend test — the specimen is cold-bent through 180° around a specified mandrel and inspected for cracking on the outer convex surface. Chemical composition can be verified alongside per the IS 6911 grade table where full material certification is required.

How the Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet and Strip Testing is Conducted
- 1
Sample Selection & Condition Check
A representative sample is drawn and the supply condition (annealed vs. cold-rolled/work-hardened) is confirmed against the order specification. - 2
Tensile Coupon Preparation
A standard tensile test piece is cut from the plate, sheet or strip per IS 6911:2017 sampling location rules. - 3
Tensile Testing
The coupon is loaded in a calibrated UTM to determine yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation, checked against the declared grade and condition. - 4
Bend Test
A separate specimen is cold-bent through 180° around the mandrel diameter specified for the grade and thickness; the outer convex surface is inspected for cracking. - 5
Reporting
Tensile and bend results are compiled into a NABL-accredited report confirming grade and condition compliance, issued via Autovity QLMS.
